BIG MOUTH LOU CAPASSO - A GREAT ACTION BOWLER

Lou capasso was an amazing bowler. i have bowled action in 5 states from the mid 70's till now. he attacked the lanes like a hungry bear. he could overcome all lane conditions and play anywhere on the lane. true story ,one night in staten island Daley wouldn't let his boys bowl Lou a match. then he and snake were turned down for a doubles match by Daley

Lou was someone who had natural talent and wasted it. Maybe is was due to too much too soon & being too young {of course not to mention the "powder" or gambling problems.} Looking at his size you would never think he was as smooth as he was. He actually made it look easy. The guy had NATURAL TALENT THAT YOU RARELY SEE TODAY. I really miss watching him bowl. I bet if he had the right people behind him Lou Capasso would have gone far.

i saw this young man bowl action in the late seventies. he was a monster. he intimidated his opponent like nothing I've ever saw before or since. i never saw him bowl bad. always in the pocket no matter what the lane conditions were. he destroyed most of the bowlers he went against. relic

Horn and myself went to Laguardia the 1st time I was bowling a guy named dirt for about 1g agame fornt and back. I win 4 straight and the horn was shooting dicein the back. after that match is when I bowled behrbaum he beats me the 1st game for 300 i won the next 2 beating him by 30 each game and he quits we win about 4500 that night 3 way split .next morning we go to bridge lanes and look for action but there was none so he takes me to the track. he is broke by the 7th and we play a $50 late double he picks the 1st race i pick the 2nd I know nothing about horses so i pick the horse nicky santagata is riding we hit the double pay about 65 dollars so he now has about 800 we get home around 7 and says lets go to the meadowlands. we do,he goes broke in 3 races!!! that was just richie. I never knew berardi to gamble outside of bowling and joe and i hung together for a very short while the first year he got married becouse i got married the same time. Joe was so smooth and threw a great ball. He and I closed more than 1 bar in those days. lou

Only at Maple Lanes could you find pot games every day.usually 8 to 15 bowlers daily and 20 or more on the weekends plus thursday night after the classic league till 5 or 6 in the morning. Alot of people have said it was not an action house. But if you wanted to see great bowlers and legends bowl, this was the place. The horn Simo Sr, Joe S, Eddie O, Joe M, Spallone,Mike Y ,Bill P Tusa,, and usually a few outsiders would show up for the 10 to 30 dollar a man pot games. 30 a man with 15 guys was serious money in the mid 70's especially for a 15 year old like myself. there were 2 KIDS that bowled in those pot game Nicky Box and me. and we always held our own . but there was great competition there. Imagine having 4 or 5 of the best action shooters around and having the chance at beating them. Those were the best nights of my life!!!! Unfortunatly Going to school the next day was rough.
I stay in touch with saba there and i still believe there are pot games daily there. there was always good pots there. I remember one saturday Joe M throws the 1st 11 across 21-24 and puts his ball away never throws the last shot, what a character!!! One day after a like tourny Joe tusa wins and I finish third so he was bragging and I call him out. I was about 16 my dad had to sign for the money I won in the tourney. But tusa agrees to bowl this loadmouth kid. Now remember Maple was a Lefty house.I am righty But I picked 15 & 16 which was a good righty pair not as good as 21 and 2. But they were not used and tight off the gutter and i figured we could get 6 games or so before it would even start to break down. anyway tusa shoots 300 and ties me next game I shoot another 300. Tusa was never the same!!!! maple pot games were a great way to make money becouse there were always side bets. snake and me or snake and c bank always some one to rough it up a bit

At rainbow I bowled steve fishman the night of the roth & rags against Cliff and daly I think we bowled for 25 a game or so I won 3 straight but I bowled snake there a few times and I bowled mostly 2 years of leagues there in 85 or so thats the year i started bowling again. Here is an action story thats funny, I was bowling in the classic league in garden city in 1979 or 1980 and bowled on a team with keith doran, he was an ok bowler who ( in my opinion) thought he was better than he was. well one night I put him 3rd in the line up and he complained all night and than started to egg me into a match. after the league we bowled and I whooped him good 4 or 5 straight. and he kept annoying me after the match so I said listen bowl me (now EX) wife heads up if you can beat her I will give you a rematch. Debbie was a hell of a player. he gat even more pissed off and it ended up with me kicking his butt at garden city and making him apologize to my ex and myself while saying uncle!!!!

To Billy Red
I DO NOT KNOW EITHER OF THESE GUYS AND I HAVE BEEN AROUND ACTION SINCE 1970 I HAVE SEEN THEM ALL HORNREICH LEMON SCHLAGAL BERARDI RUDY SNAKE CAPASSO KITTER ALL OF THEM THEY WERE ALL GREAT BOWLERS GREAT!!! BILLY RED I AM SURE YOU ARE GOOD BUT YOU YOURSELF SAID YOU BEAT HORN AND SNAKE AND WHOEVER ELSE BUT YOU ALSO SAID THEY WERE NOT IN THERE PRIME AND THEY WEREN'T.
ONE THING FOR SURE IS IF LOU WAS BOWLING STILL HE WOULD BEAT YOU BADLY. AND HERES WHY, HE COULD REV THE HELL OUT OF THE BALL WITH PERFECT STROKE AND BALANCE AND COULD ALSO SPLIT BOARDS. WITH THIS NEW EQUIPTMENT HE WOULD EAT UP THE CONDITIONS .AFTER THE FIRST GAME YOU WOULD BE IN AWE OF HIM. I LIVE IN JERSEY NOW AND BOWLED IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS HIM ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO HE SHOT THE LIGHTS OUT CONSISTANTLY. AND HE WASN'T 1/2 THE BOWLER HE WAS AT 18 THEN.I WAS ALSO AT THE GRIMALDI MATCH AT BOWLRITE. THE MAN STUFFED 48 SHOTS FLUSH. GRIMALDI WAS IN A DAZE AFTER THE MATCH AND SO WERE HIS BACKERS. ONE THING FOR SURE IS HE QUIT A WINNER. BILLY BOWL WHO YOU WANT BUT BOWL TODAYS STARS NOT YESTERDAYS WHY BOWL LOU OR HORN OR SNAKE NOW THERE DAYS HAVE GONE . JUST TO SAY YOU BEAT THEM I WOULD LAUGH AT YOU . AND SO WOULD ANYONE ELSE WHO NEW THE SPORT.

Mark Roth was the best, bowled him 2 times in the finals on tour won 1 lost one the time I beat him I got fined for being well lets say ME!!!! petraglia i bowled once in finals i won. Johnny Petraglia was and always will be my Idol in the game he was a great bowler and always helped me as a kid trying to learn the game. As did his father Bill who was also a good bowler and very good coach. I am proad to say I got to bowl for Bill Petraglia as a Jr. bowler for Maple lanes in the early 70's against Madison sq. garden. As jr's we always looked forward to those matches and Bill was there with us coaching us all the way. I remember watching abc sports every week one year and Johnny made just about every show. We would watch at Maple, those were exciting days.I was at the match when john and mark bowled kitter and burgland, john and cliff were awful and the doubles ended fast.  I was having more fun and betting on bob spallone on the corner pair bowling woowoo woo the BEEPER. the last game bob needed aspare to win and walked to the pins and knocked over the 10 pin from about 3 feet it was the funniest thing i had ever seen. hey senior are you BOB or Billy????

I beat alot of great bowlers but usually never bowled them again. I always thought if I beat them why bowl them again!  Geno was a friend of mine. Ask geno about san antonio. doran was a nothing who was pissed i put him 3rd in the line up or some thing. after that match he wanted to bowl me at plainview I was all for it I won a regional there. never happened though.what is your name You can e mail me at [email protected] I bowled the newsday only once I think it was syosset I did not make the finals I think 3/4 of the field made the cut off 1 day, i thought that strange and never bowled again in that tournement. I did bowl me 1st pba 300 at garden city it was the year after i led the ptq squad there. I always loved bowling there. There were alot of tough bowlers men and women that bowled there. and about jeff he was a great bowler no doubt. I mean no disrespect towards any bowler named in these posts they are all truly great bowlers . Lou C

Lou Capasso, When you bowled Jeff who was the favorite going into the match, what bowling lanes was the match held at, was it pre arranged or spur of the moment. Was Bill Daly backing Jeff, how much were the games for, what did you think of Jeff prior to your match and what did you think of him after you beat him. One last thing, what did you think of Burgland as a bowler, did they try and bowl you in a doubles match.

Bowled burgland at laguardia lanes bowled kitter at either falcaro,s or garden city daly backed them the horn backed me i am not 100% sure but kitter match in neiborhood of 1500 per game and burgland match was a few hundred per game. I thought Cliff to be a good bowler, and i was nervous when i bowled kitter 1st game. I have bowled many a good bowler including bob perry at colombia lanes and i won 3 up best match i bowled next to bowling dave ferraro at bellerose in the late 70,s or early 80,s. were we went back and forth for about 10 games or so i dont think anyone ended up ahead that afternoon. Buy the way thank you for asking these questions becouse it brings back old and fond memories of a great game that I loved more than life itself at onetime...  Lou C

hi lou i never met you but did see tou bowl in action and in regionals . you were a very good bowler , now dont take this wrong ,me myself felt jeff kitter was a notch above you . i made the newsday finals in 1981 and jeff came in third behind hank and chris riga. everyone was playing around 12 and jeff was playing around 20 the lanes were kind of polish dry wet and jeff was ripping racks. you may know something i dont know but i dont believe jeff was using a load. i think you were friends with or knew geno papandrea? and also when you beat the root at garden city why didnt you smack him around a little harder that arrogant little lepracaun looking jerk needed to be put in his place again lou you were a great bowler but in my opinion just atad shy of jeff
star-bar-flashing
No i dont waste my time bowling anymore and it is true i did beat jeff and his buddy cliff with the ever famous daly backing them. and by the way another great bowler made mince meat out of him at bowlmor a guy buy the name of roy garcea. keep bowling becouse if you average 230 now you couldnt avg 175 in brooklyn in the 70,s the game is THAT EASY NOW. lets bowl today and THROW IT RIGHT AND WATCH IT STOP AT THE POCKET C,MON its not that tough anymore from 1975 to 1982 when i quit bowling i had 5 300 games i now have over 20 and i bowled them in about 3 years time high average was 195 to 200 in classic leagues inthe 70,s i had not bowled for 8 years and averaged 231 bowling once a week with 4 300 games in 12 months N.J. has always had easier conditions than n.y. averages were alway 15 to 20 pins higher in jersey now every one averages a deuce and better bowling will NEVER BE THE SAME try golf or something and dont quit your day job cause the pba tour has had the same money on top for 30 years have they heard of raising the prize fund
